Lokrum Island – Day 3

10 minutes by ferry to Dubrovnik is Lokrum Island. The first mention of Lokrum in writing came in 1023, in connection with the founding of the Benedictine abbey and monastery. According to legend Richard the Lion-Heart was cast ashore here after being shipwrecked in 1192 while returning from the Crusades. The vow he made to build a church on the spot where he came ashore should he be saved was kept at least in part. Although he came ashore in Lokrum, at the request of the people of Dubrovnik, he agreed to have the church built in the city itself.

The Benedictine Monastery. According to Lokrum Island history, the monastery was first referenced in 1023 and holds a somewhat sinister and eerie myth. In the 1500s the monks were forced to leave their home on Lokrum and it is said they placed a curse in retribution, on whoever would own the Island after them. In years to follow unexplainable deaths befell on the family of the Croatian King. Thanks to the Lokrum Island curse, it is forbidden to spend the night on the island!

Today the Monastery serves as an exhibit to walk through and includes a small visitor center and the Game of Thrones exhibit, yes there ius the Throne…

The Lokrum Island Botanical Gardens host hundreds of exotic plant species and is the perfect place to stop and smell the roses – literally! Notes of lavender, rosemary, sage, and pine fill the air, creating a tantalizing Mediterranean perfume.

Dead Sea Mrtvo More. During many million years the rocks were intensely tectonically disturbed, as indicated by fractures and faults, which were gradually widened by karstification and erosional activity of the sea. In this way the ancient erosional depression in the relief has been filled with sea during the youngest geological age, the Quarternary. Today “The Dead Sea” is the famous Lokrum beach.
